What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine is the use of herbs from various parts of the world for the purpose of bringing about a state of health and healing in the patient. Dolly uses her extensive training in Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, to inform her current approach, that of modern medical science.

What does a consultation involve?

The background of the patient’s condition is assessed through a thorough case history, taking account of current medication, family history, personal health history and lifestyle choices. The treatment plan is directed at the causes, not just the presenting symptoms. The patients vitality and consitution is assessed to further inform the choice of herbs in the prescription. For this reason, prescriptions may vary substantially between individual patients presenting with apparently similar conditions. These herbs may be prescribed in a variety of forms, most commonly a tincture or tea. Herbal treatment is commonly backed up by appropriate advice on lifestyle, particularly nutrition.

    Ayurveda, what is it?

Ayurveda is the traditional system of health of India, which dates back over 5000 years. It is directly translated as the knowledge of life, where life is seen as being made up of body, mind, sense organs and soul. It is a way of life according to natural laws and as such its primary focus is on the maintenance of health and so also on prevention of disease.

Ayurveda sees everything in existence as being made up of five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether. They combine in the body to be expressed in terms of functions. These functional entities are termed as doshas, and these are three: VATA, PITTA and KAPHA.

Disease/dissorders are seen as imbalances of these elements within the body, treatment is based upon bringing them back into balance by use of herbs, proper diet and lifestyle.
